In the heart of Oakland’s Fruitvale district, a group of neighbors did what local officials couldn’t: build a self-sustaining food exchange from scratch.
What began as a side-street pantry under a tarp has become The Unity Shed, an evolving mutual aid hub that now includes cold storage, hot meals, free masks, mental health pamphlets, and a rotating team of volunteers who know the faces of those they serve.
No applications. No bureaucracy. Just a chalkboard with three words: “Take what you need.”
This story looks at how the Unity Shed is replicating across California, how it’s funded with direct cash and no overhead, and why “charity” is being replaced by solidarity.
